Primary Sources

The most valuable document that gives information about Light Dragoons of the period is the "Discipline of Light Horse" By Capt. Robert Hinde of the 21st Light Dragoons (Royal Foresters)
In the book he goes into detail about uniforms, weapons, drill, saddlery, and horses. It also includes anectodes of some actions that were taking place in America involving members of the 16th and 17th Light Dragoons.



Orders & Letters
 27 January 1775- The King has been please to order the 17th Regiment of Light Dragoons to embark for Boston in North America.
21 February 1775- 17th Regiment of Light Dragoons is ordered to embark from Ireland to North America.
30 January 1775- Camp necessaries will be signified to the Regiment of Light Dragoons and the Regiments of Foot.
31 January 1775- The Regiment of Light Dragoons and Regiment of Foot shall embark from Corke for Boston in North America on the first of March.
1 February 1775- The Regiment of Light Dragoons and the three Regiments of Foot shall embark on the first of March from Ireland to North America.
14 February 1775- Signify to make a draft of 27 private men from the King's regiment of Light Dragoons.
14 February 1775- The drafts shall receive their clothing, arms, accouterments, and horse furniture with their respected Corps.
24 February 1775- 17th Regiment of Light Dragoons being ordered to embark from Ireland to North America.
24 February 1775- Mr. Chamier presents his compliments to Mr. Boddington.
24 February 1775- Two officers and 54 drafts destined for the 17th Regiment of Light Dragoons shall embark at Deptford in the horse transport.
25 February 1775- Letter home from a Scots officer.
7 March 1775- The orders are sent for the march of the Drafts and will arrive in Greenwich and Deptford tomorrow.
 7 March 1775- Have Preston transmit Barrington a state of the 17th Regiment of Light Dragoons on their being embarked for North America.
9 March 1775- Sent enclosed His Majesty's instructions for the government of the 17th Regiment.
11 March 1775- Sent enclosed the distribution of pay of the Regiment of Dragoons when on service, together with the number of rations of forage and provisions which are to be issued.
14 March 1775- The 17th Regiment of Light Dragoons should embark from Ireland  for North America.
17 March 1775- The Journal of Thomas Sullivan.
19 April 1775- Losses of the Military and Naval forces engaged in the war of the American Revolution.
22 April 1775- A list of Regiments ordered to embark for America from Ireland is received.
12 June 1775- The grenadiers and light infantry are to close their encampment to the right, in order to make room for the cavalry.
12 June 1775- A corporal and ten privates are to attend Captain Delancy of the light dragoons.
16 June 1775- The hay Guard is to be furnished till further orders.
24 June 1775- Extract of a letter from the Lord's Lieutenant of Ireland to the Earl Rochford.
4 July 1775- The clothing accouterments necessary for the Regiments shall be provided in Ireland and exported from thence.
7 July 1775- Major General Clinton is appointed to the command and inspection of various Corps.
16 July 1775- A new order of battle is formed.
20 July 1775- Corps are put under the command and inspection of Major General Clinton.
20 July 1775- A general Court Martial is to sit at the Concert hall to try prisoners.
1 August 1775- The 17th Regiment of Light Dragoons is considered as part of the establishment of Ireland.
17 August 1775- The diary of Samuel Bixby.
19 August 1775- Passes granted to women and children aboard the ship, Charming Nancy.
22 August 1775- The Dragoons at the lines are to be reinforced at night by a Corporal and four privates.
16 September 1775- The troops in Boston are to be victualled by the Commissary General.
5 October 1775- The Raven arrived, though she sailed three weeks before her.
20 October 1775- The General Officers of the army give in returns of their effective horses.
21 October 1775- The Light Dragoons Mill patrol the streets every night.
28 October 1775- The generals and staff officers are to receive forage on Mondays.
12 November 1775- The Light Dragoons will enter into the winter quarters allotted for them.
18 November 1775- Members of the 17th Dragoons are to hold themselves in readiness to go to England on the recruiting service.
18 November 1775- A return from different regiments of the names of officers that are to go on the recruiting service.
28 November 1775- The clothing and accouterments necessary for the Regiments shall be provided in Ireland.
29 November 1775- Methods proposed by Corps for supplying their officers with camp equipage.
8 December 1775- Several invoices of medicines and materials have been returned.
1776- The information of his Excellency the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and the Surgeon Caldwell are intended to serve in North America.
6 January 1776- Each troop of the 17th Regiment shall be augmented with one cornet, one sergeant, two corporals, and thirty private men.
6 January 1776- Acquaint Barrington with number of horses to be sent over to North America.
8 January 1776- Commands to signify to summon a board of General Officers to inspect patterns that will be exhibited.
13 January 1776- Signify to furnish General Preston with such parties as can be spared from the 1st Regiment.
15 January 1776- Signify to give directions that a complete set of tents and camp necessaries to be provided for the men of the 17th Regiment.
16 January 1776- The 16th Regiment of Light Dragoons shall embark early in the spring for North America.
26 January 1776- Major General Preston of the 17th Regiment of Light Dragoons inspected every ship and found every transport so full of Casks and Forage.
27 January 1776- Printed copies of his majesty's most gracious pardon to deserters from the land forces.
29 January 1776- Acquaint  General Howe about the promotions recommended have been confirmed by his majesty.
21 February 1776- Sent enclosed order for the march of the volunteers and recruits of the 17th Regiment of Light Dragoons to Newcastle.
24 February 1776- A thousand draught horses are being provided for the service of the troops under the command of Major General Howe.
26 March 1776- Preston's request to promote Patterson and Hussey to Lieutenant and Cornet.
30 March 1776- The 400 dismounted Dragoons and 6 additional Cornets shall be sent to North America.
2 April 1776- Acquaint Barrington with foundation of the allowances made by the warrant granted at Boston.
12 April 1776-  Six additional Cornets and the dismounted men of the Queen's Light Dragoons are to embark in the transports intended to carry over the horses for the use of the troops in North America.
13 April 1776- The stoppages for the two Regiments of Light Dragoons are to be made agreeable to the numbers mentioned in the margin.
29 April 1776- The Cartouch Boxes are wanted for the respective augmentations lately made to the three Regiments of Light Dragoons.
8 May 1776- The receipt of your Lordships dispatches to the 21st of December by Sir James Baird.
18 May 1776- Copies have been transmitted to Lieutenant Colonel Harcourt.
22 May 1776- Lieutenant Bunbury of the 17th Regiment has left for Ireland.
28 May 1776- Horse transports for North America.
31 May 1776- Captain Needham is to report to this office of the dismounted men of the 17th Regiment of Light Dragoons.
12 June 1776- Lord Townsend has made himself responsible for Sir William Montgomery.
13 June 1776- Mr. Lewis presents his compliments to the Comptroller of the Navy.
13 June 1776- Each Serjeant, Corporal, Trumpeter, and Private Men of the dismounted Dragoons should receive the same personal pay as the mounted men of each rank.
15 June 1776- Lieutenant Colonel Ainslie will apprise the officers who command on the board of Transports.
10 September 1776- Tents being wanted for the several Regiments mentioned in the annexed list serving in North America for the campaign of 1777.
16 September 1776- Tents may be delivered out of his Majesty's stores for the forces serving in North America for the campaign of 1777.
16 September 1776- Give directions that 25 round tents and 48 horsemen's tents be immediately provided for the 16th Regiment of Light Dragoons.
26 September 1776- Regulation of forage is to be issued by the Commissary General.
6 October 1776- A squadron of the 17th Dragoons on New York Island will march tomorrow.
16 October 1776- His Majesty has been pleased to make promotions.
18 October 1776- 17th Regiment of Light Dragoons from New York Island join the army.
21 October 1776- The tents are to be struck at 7 o'clock this morning and the troops are to be in readiness to march.
22 October 1776- The board of general officers are appointed to inspect the clothing.
24 October 1776- The dismounted Dragoons are to join the army immediately.
30 October 1776- The Dragoons are to be equally divided into three divisions.
31 October 1776- Commander in Chief has been pleased to make promotions.
3 November 1776- The 16th and 17th Dragoons are immediately to make up three days Forage.
4 November 1776- The army is to march by the left in two columns.
11 November 1776-  The baggage is to move off as soon as loaded.
11 November 1776- Directions for the march of the army.
14 November 1776- The 16th and 17th Dragoons will furnish a patrol of an officer and 16 men, each on the road to West Chester.
15 November 1776- Three parties are to take post at Major General Grant's quarters.
17 November 1776- Troops are to march tomorrow and encamp near New York.
22 November 1776- A guard of an officer and 20 Dragoons from New York to Kingsbridge.
28 November 1776- The detachments of Regiments are now embarked under the command of Lieutenant General Clinton.
1 December 1776- The 16th Dragoons will march tomorrow as early as possible to Denys's Ferry.
2 December 1776- Commander in Chief is pleased to make promotions.
11 January 1777- Order to provide 50 horses in order to complete the 16th Regiment.
15 January 1777- Detachment of subaltern and 30 dismounted Dragoons are to take post at Greenwich.
16 January 1777- George Harris returns home safely with his horses.
26 January 1777- Upon an alarm of fire, the troops will form their respective parades and wait for further orders.
27 January 1777- The dismounted Dragoons of the 17th Regiment are to take post on Thursday the 30th at Greenwich.
27 January 1777- The 50 horses to be provided for the 16th Regiment of Light Dragoons should be ready to be delivered by the dealers at Portsmath by the 25th of February.
2 February 1777- Cornet Pattinson of the 17th Regiment is appointed Lieutenant Colonel to the Prince of Wales' Royal American Volunteers.
14 February 1777- Ensign Thomas Remain from the 43rd Regiment is to be Cornet by purchase.
16 February 1777- Extracts of orders given by different British General officers.
19 February 1777- Signify the King's pleasure to do issue on Messrs.
19 February 1777- Give directions to Paymaster General that stoppages for 240 horses should for the future be retained.
20 February 1777- Officers who are to take charge of the parties and the ones on board with the transporters should be under the command of Colonel Blunt.
23 February 1777- The Royal Artillery, 15th Regiment, 27th Regiment, and 17th Light Dragoons are to attend for receiving their provisions the next victuallizing day.
28 February 1777- Extract of a letter from Quarter-Master Sandford.
5 March 1777- Barrington will grant the warrant laid before the King for the sum of one thousand, six hundred and sixty three pounds, fourteen shillings, and three pence.
6 March 1777- Sent enclosed list of the transports with the number of horses to be put on board each ship.
14 March 1777- Barrington desires a report made of the arrival of the 16th and 17th Regiment of Light Dragoons.
16 April 1777- Sixty men should be drafted from the Regiments of Light Dragoons in Ireland to be incorporated into the 16th and 17th Regiments of Light Dragoons.
28 May 1777- Captain Moxham's troop of the 17th Light Dragoons is to be landed as soon as possible.
29 May 1777- The 17th Light Dragoons are to send an exact return of the number of horses to be shipped in case of an embarkation to the quarter master general's office.
1 June 1777- One hundred recruits for the Dragoons are to be paid two pence per day.
2 June 1777- The Commander in Chief is pleased to make promotions.
2 June 1777- The receipt of Howe's letter enclosing three memorials is acknowledged.
6 June 1777- Lieutenant Colonel Ainslie represented that there will not be officers and men sufficient with the dismounted of the 16th and 17th Regiments to furnish parties to each of the transports.
13 June 1777- Journal entries of Thomas Sullivan.
11 September 1777- Captain Coore will send to headquarters every day at 9 o'clock for orders.
30 September 1777- Diary at Robert Morion.
3 October 1777- Extract of a letter from New York, July 20.
4 October 1777- The Diary of Robert Morton.
22 December 1777- 10 or 12 Light Dragoons were surrounded by the rebels.
3 January 1778- Sergeant Wiggins of the 16th Light Dragoons fired upon while carrying flag of truce.
8 January 1778- Make known of the coming in of 2nd Lieutenant Eyre of the 23rd Regiments of Foot.
18 February 1778- Thomas Wileman of the 17th Dragoons was taken prisoner by the rebels near Darby.
29 March 1778- Cornet Samuel Watts of the 17th Regiment has given his resignation to retire from the service.
29 March 1778- Secretary of War promoted Captain Thomas Stanley to be Major of Regiment.
1 April 1778- Memorial of Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Birch.
22 April 1778- Cornet Sloper of the 17th Regiment of Dragoons is approved as aide de Camp to his father Major General Sloper.
15 May 1778- A list of British prisoners of war in Lancaster.
20 May 1778- Strength of the Garrison of Rhode Island effectives present.
20 May 1778- The usual warrants for passing the Assignments of the Offreckonings were issued from this office.
19 December 1778- The vacancy of a troop in the 17th Regiment of Light Dragoons has been uncovered.
13 February 1779- C. Jinkinson presented to his majesty the memorial of Captain Lieutenant Archdale, Lieutenant Nettles, and Cornet Cooke.
October 1779- Letter to Sir Henry Clinton.
22 November 1779- Abstract of the men, women, and children victualled at Brooklyn, Denyces, Newtown, and Flushing on Long Island.
3 December 1779- Lord Barrington has approved of the Sum of eighty Guinees to be allowed to Colonel Ainslie.
14 July 1780- Proceedings of a Court of Enquiry.
8 [No Month] 1781- Give directions that the clothing of the 17th Regiment be provided and parked in readiness for shipping by July 10, 1781.
29 April 1781- Number of the returned men, women, and children victualled at New York and the Outposts.
7 June 1781- Seth Mead being sworn on the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God.
15 November 1781- State of the rank and file of the British army in North America.
5 February 1782- List of the return of the British soldiers prisoners of war in the New Goal.
3 May 1782- Many Regiments have been recruited by sundry drafts from the 20th Regiment of Foot.
6 June 1782- Lieutenant General Gage is to give directions that the clothing of the 17th Regiment of Light Dragoons be presented.
9 June 1783- A plan of the establishment of several regiments to be reduced.
16 September 1783- The British and British American Regiments destined for St. John's in Nova Scotia are to become Regiments of militia.
28 September 1783- Commissioned officers are to be sent to the Adjutant Generals.
28 September 1783- British soldiers are going to settle in Nova Scotia.
